Perception

“Language please?” the docent asks.
“Excuse me,” I reply
“Where are you from?” she inquires.
“United States,” I answer.
“Okay, here you go” the greeter send me on my way with an audio guide programed for my preference.  My daughter has managed to unintentionally reprogram her audio wand to Spanish each time we use one of the guides.  Her non native language comprehension is limited enough that the narrative is lost on her.

It reminds me how important it is to set-up our guests for success.  Are they being provided directions that they can understand?  Is the information relevant?  Do you ask for feedback after their visit?  Do you truly listen to their response?  Is there context for the information they receive?  Did you select the right language?

Back to School Night

Does you organization or cause hold the equivalent of a ‘back to school night?’  A chance for members and customers to come and interact with your staff and get a sense of what programs exist.  Is is scheduled at a convenient time with some headline event or announcement?  Is there a chance for the attendees to connect with each other and share their passion?  Do you ask your audience if they would recommend the organization and the event?  Do you announce new programs or enhancements to your most popular services?

Done well, it can really be an exciting evening.

Info

Where do your fans and customers get information about your cause?  Is it easy to obtain?  Is it accurate and up-to-date?  Do they come to you or do you need to go to them?  Have you asked those individuals seeking information which format works best for them?  Do you use multiple platforms or just one?  Do you need to get out and about of spend more time manning the information desk?

Many social sector organizations claim to be the best kept secret in town.  Perhaps you need to consider a new strategy for expanding your presence.
