Where do we leave footprints for others to follow or witness our passing? How long do they last? Do they serve as inspiration or frustration to those that follow? Are we more likely to continue our work when we know others are ahead, or do we consider a new route if a path has already been traveled?
Followers
Following
Three boats in a row, the latter two following the wake of the first. Who has the most responsibility in this scenario? Do the second and third boats leverage some leadership to the lead boat? Do they each maintain equal accountability for their autonomy?
It is convenient to allow those we follow to set the course? We can lapse into a daze and miss key landmarks, junctions, possible threats, and options. It does save us energy and resources to turn over leadership to those who take the point.
How might we be more intentional about when we lead and when we follow? Who might we remain flexible to break off from the pack when it serves our best interest or the navigation requires individual decision-making?
Everybody But One

When I first encountered this sign I missed the arrow for Vaca Ranch and assumed every outfit was to the right. It seemed obvious that the main course of travel went right. Among the noise and clutter, it is hard to stand out, despite taking the road less traveled. Just because we are on different route than the rest, does not mean those seeking us will be successful in navigating to our location.
Different Purpose

Viewed from the base, a ski area has a specific layout. Observed from above, and the terrain appears different. Ski areas are designed for skiers, however they can provide interest even for those who are not skiing.
Perhaps it is worth remembering that not everyone who benefits from our organization comes through the front door. Many a cathedral has been celebrated from the outside without engaging in the religious ecosystem that flourishes inside.
Searchlights and Fireworks

Anyone can hire a pair of searchlights to illuminate the night sky and draw the curious. Same with fireworks. Swirling and screaming beams of light and loud unexpected explosions call attention to your location. The real questions is what do you have to offer once everyone assembles. Too often we look for followers without thinking about what we can give. Be remarkable for your service and the value you add to other people’s journey. The followers will come if the work you do matters. Otherwise, make it known that you are in the entertainment business.
